Safer Internet Day 2024
Through the years, Safer Internet Day has evolved into a significant milestone in the online safety landscape.
Originating as an endeavour within the EU SafeBorders project in 2004 and subsequently adopted by the Insafe network as one of its earliest initiatives in 2005, Safer Internet Day has expanded far beyond its original geographic boundaries and is now observed in nearly 170 countries across the globe – impressive!
Safer Internet Day is the UK’s biggest celebration of online safety, taking place on the 6th of February 2024. Each year they cover an online issue or theme that resonates with the experiences of young people whilst using the internet, this year’s theme is based around ‘Inspiring change? Making a difference, managing influence, and navigating change online’.
Safer Internet Day 2024 will be Focusing on:
• Young people’s perspective on new and emerging technologies
• Using the internet to make change for the better
• The changes young people want to see online
• The things that can influence and change the way young people think, feel and act online and offline.
How is Senso Supporting Safer Internet Day?
Our mission at Senso is to be at the forefront of safeguarding developments in EdTech by leading linguistically informed research. To mark Safer Internet Day 2024, the linguistics safeguarding team at Senso.cloud will be hosting a symposium that focuses on ‘Inspiring Change and Driving Innovation in Safeguarding’ at Birmingham City University’s STEAMhouse on 8th February 2024, 1.00pm - 4.30pm.
The symposium will feature talks from our safeguarding language specialist, Dr Charlotte-Rose Kennedy (Renato Software Ltd and Birmingham City University). Charlotte will discuss her ongoing Knowledge Transfer Partnership with Birmingham City University and demonstrate how the use of cutting-edge linguistic methods are driving change and leading innovation in safeguarding research.
The event will also include talks from key partners from the worlds of safeguarding and online safety.
Charlotte will be joined by David Wright (UKSIC and SWGfL, Dr Craig Evans, (Swansea University), Dr Mark McGlashan (Birmingham City University), Dr Emma Franklin (independent researcher), and Dr Tharindu Ranasinghe (Aston University), who will also be giving talks that provide insights into the safeguarding current landscape and innovative developments in EdTech.
