Energy Efficiency Tips
As we head into autumn and winter, the reality of increased energy bills is something we are all aware of, with phrases such as 'Heat or eat' in circulation. With many of us refusing to turn on the heating, opting for cosy blankets during the colder months, we have a few tips to help you save money when it comes to your electricity bills.
Tackling Wasted Energy
The cost-of-living crisis is affecting more than just UK homes, it’s also affecting businesses and schools too, taking big chunks out of school budgets. We’ve researched some simple, yet effective tips to save on electricity costs within your school or business.
Classroom temperature
This is an obvious one, but making sure all heating and cooling controls are set to an efficient temperature ensures your money goes further. The recommended optimum classroom temperature is 18°C. Smart heating solutions can help to tackle wasted energy too!
Switch OFF the computers
Believe it or not, PCs and monitors consume a lot more energy when on standby. The ideal solution would be to ensure all computers in your school or business are set to activate ‘hibernate mode’ after 10 minutes of non-use. Small changes will make a bigger difference longer term.
Monitor Energy Usage
Turning off your monitors
A hard task, but encouraging staff and pupils to manually turn off monitors when they are not being used will help to make a big difference in the long run. Monitors are responsible for almost two-thirds of a computer’s total energy consumption. So, if you have each individual PC on for 24 hours a day it will cost around £25 per PC per year to run. Shocking, we know! If you can make the change and get into the habit of turning monitors off between classes and when the school day ends, especially on a Friday before the weekend, you will avoid wasted energy and costs.
Natural light
Minimise the use of lighting in classrooms where possible. According to a few studies, pupils are more productive when working in natural daylight – perfect!
Budgeting Tips
Energy saving lights
LED lights use up to 85% less energy than any traditional light bulb. They last much longer than older types of bulbs and also improve the quality of light too. LED replacements for incandescent, halogen and fluorescent lamps can run with no maintenance for more than a decade – amazing. Costs of purchasing LED lights are repaid through the long-term energy savings. It’s a no brainer really, make the swap and save your budget!
Devices during the school holidays
This one goes without saying, but you would be surprised by how often machines get left on during the holidays. Ensuring that all electrical devices and appliances are turned off throughout the school holidays and not just on standby offers another cost-effective solution. Machines on standby still consume a lot of electricity.
